Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear?

We recommend light, quick-drying athletic clothing and/or swimsuits. Heavy cotton clothing is not recommended. Dress for the weather, layer if necessary. Always wear sunscreen! We recommend a hat for paddling. If you love your sunglasses, leave them on dry land unless you have them secured with a strap. We are not responsible for items that are lost in the water.

What should I bring?

Bring a bottle of water. Keep a towel and a change of clothes in your car (just in case). Your instructor will have a dry bag available to hold keys if needed. There are straps on the board to secure water bottle and shoes.

Should I wear shoes?

Water shoes are a great option but they are not required. If you decide to take them off while paddling, you can secure them under the straps on the board.

Do people fall in?

Yes, absolutely! But not as often as you might think. The fear of falling is always worse than the fall itself! We teach you how to get back on the board if you do happen to fall and we’re always there if you need help.

Do I have to be able to swim?

Yes! All participants MUST be able to swim.

Do I have to wear a life jacket or vest to paddle?

In our classes, yes. PFD’s (Personal Floatation Devices) must be worn for all SUP classes. United States Coast Guard (USCG) regulations are 12 and under are required to wear their life jacket. Adults and children over 12 are required to have them on their paddle board at all times. Waist-pack and other inflatable PFD’s are permitted if you bring your own and have previous paddle experience.

Do I have to wear a life jacket for SUP Yoga?

You can take off your life jacket for SUP Yoga after your board is securely anchored in place. If you decide not to take it off, that’s perfectly fine too!

Can I bring my own Board?

Yes, absolutely! Use coupon code: BYOB for the $15 discount. If bringing your own board you are also responsible for your own paddle, USCG approved life jacket, safety whistle, and SUP Leash. For SUP Yoga we will supply anchors for you.

Can I bring my teenager?

Our policy is 16 and older unless approved in advance. Kids, especially teenagers, come in all shapes and sizes with a wide range of skills and ability which is why we can make exceptions. Contact tara@rivertownssupyoga.com if you have questions or wish to discuss your individual situation. Private family lessons are a great option when first introducing members of your family to paddle boarding. We do not carry lift jackets in youth sizes. Ages 12 and under are REQUIRED to bring their own USCG Life Jacket and must wear it at all times out on the water.

What’s your cancellation policy?

In the event of adverse weather and/or water conditions, Rivertowns SUP & Yoga will cancel the class and timely notify all registrants. In this case, registrants may reschedule to a different date. If a date is unavailable, a refund* will be provided.

48-hr cancellation policy — due to limited class size, you must cancel your reservation at least 48-hrs in advance to reschedule or receive a refund*.

*Please note: credit card processing fees are nonrefundable.
